Welcome to TAG Dog Training & Education Centre’s Canine Instructor Training Program (CITP)! This unique professional program emphasizes the behavioural relationships between the canine and human handler, anchored in a foundation of positive reinforcement that collectively lead to effective canine training.
TAG Dog Training & Education Centre, as an organization, and each of its instructors, take the training of canines very seriously. Cheryl Smith, our Program Director, and every member of her support network ascribes to the values on which the company is based, including Leadership, Collaboration, Integrity and Ethics. By joining the Canine Instructor Training Program you have indicated your passion in canine training, as well as your embracing of these important values. You are now part of the TAG family as you embark on a rigorous and rewarding experience.
Once again, welcome to the family! If, at any time during your training, you have any questions or concerns, never hesitate to ask any member of the family!
It is important to emphasize at the outset of this program that the CITP demands considerable dedication and continuous effort. It must also be emphasized that while this program will result in an individual who is trained as a canine handler, this program is designed and intended to produce qualified individuals who are highly competent to instruct basic-level canine classes and to consult on general, customary issues relating to canines.
This program will not qualify an individual to instruct advanced training programs or to consult clients in matters that concern serious behavioural issues.
Should you be interested in pursuing such training, please contact the Program Director.
Interspersed throughout the three instructional modules are both individual and group “feedback sessions” in which subject-related questions and concerns are discussed and feedback on progress is provided. Feedback sessions will frequently feature videos and from time to time, guest speakers. You are required to attend 80% of the feedback sessions. We are currently developing options to attend through Skype or on-line in order to assist with those with irregular or inflexible work schedules.
(14 weeks)
This module provides the theoretical foundation from which the application of techniques is derived. It is essential that candidates understand the theoretical constructs on which the TAG Dog Training & Education Centre philosophy and techniques are based.
Candidates are required to read three of the seven books prescribed, observe classes, take notes and discuss their observations with qualified instructors. Candidates must also prepare a 10-page research paper , or presentation, on a subject determined by the Program Director.
At the end of this module candidates must successfully pass a written examination.
(14 weeks)
This module is focused on learning how to apply the theoretical foundations while continuing the development of the earlier foundational theoretical constructs. As such candidates will be required to participate in and complete a six week Basic Programme with your dog. If you do not have a dog of your own, you may use a friend’s or a relatives or other dog of your choosing. You will be mentored by a qualified instructor to ensure you are correctly implementing the appropriate techniques and that your dog is exhibiting an understanding of the cues and demonstrating normal progress in the programme. You will also observe additional classes to augment your skill base.
Candidates must read a further two of the seven books prescribed and prepare a second 10-page research paper, or presentation, on a subject determined by the Program Director.
At the end of this module candidates must successfully pass a practical examination.
(14 weeks)
This module focuses on classroom activities in which candidates will be required to lead a certain segment of different classes as an instructor and/or assistant, under the supervision of a qualified instructor.
Candidates will complete the theoretical application by reading the final two of the seven books prescribed, and will prepare a final 10-page research paper, or presentation, on a subject determined by the Program Director.
At the end of this module candidates must successfully pass a practical examination for certification under observation of a panel of three qualified trainers, and attend an interview with Cheryl Smith, Program Director.
